Pediatric Radiography: General Principles
A. Appropriately introduce radiographer to child and parent
B. Radiographer should show a positive attitude toward the
child
C. Maintain clear communication with child and parent
D. Determine extent of parental involvement
E. Report suspected child abuse (nonaccidental trauma) to
the appropriate radiologist, attending physician, radiology
supervisor, or nurse
F. Determine type of immobilization to be used for the
exam
1. Immobilization board
2. Pediatric immobilizer (e.g., Pigg-O-Stat)
3. Sandbags
4. Tape
5. Compression bands
6. Sheets and towels
G. Practice as low as reasonably achievable (ALARA) principle
1. Gonadal shielding of children
2. Tight collimation
3. Pieces of lead used as contact shields
4. Low mAs techniques
5. No repeat images
H. Determine whether patient preparation was adequately
carried out
I. Interview the parent and write down the appropriate
history
J. Briefly discuss case with radiologist to determine specifically
which projections are needed and the extent of
gonadal shielding that should be used if this is in doubt
